Solitary Tree

By Jeff Smallwood

“Oh how lonely you must be.”
I said to Solitary Tree.
“Anchored there and far from free
With none to keep you company.”

“Blind you are, though you have eyes”
I heard him say to my surprise.
“For soil, rain, and wind and skies,
Nurture without compromise.”

“But such a simple life you lead”
I said to him and disagreed.
“Though grown you have from tiny seed
You mustn't have fulfilled your needs”

Reply he did “I’ve learned so far,
How insignificant we are
But those who still reach for the stars,
Are happiest, come au revoir.”
